How to Read Chord Charts

Guitar chord diagrams (or charts) are visual representations of the fretboard.

  • Vertical Lines: The 6 strings. Low E is on the far left.
  • Horizontal Lines: The frets. The top line is the "nut" (open strings).
  • Dots: Where to place your fingers.
  • Numbers (optional): Recommended finger to use (1=Index, 4=Pinky).

Common Questions

How do I read these charts?

The vertical lines are strings (thickest on left), horizontal are frets. Dots show finger placements. 'X' means mute the string, 'O' means play open.

What does 'Sus' mean?

'Sus' stands for suspended. It means the 3rd of the chord (which defines major/minor) is replaced by either a 2nd (Sus2) or 4th (Sus4), creating an open, floating sound.
